Ladies 1st XI 1 vs. Frome 2

31.1.15: The first team travelled to local rivals Frome on Saturday looking for another win to boost their league position. Mendip started brightly against an experienced Frome team, with majority of the possession.  Within 10 minutes against the run of play Frome took a chance in the D to find the back of the goal to take an early lead.

Mendip composed themselves and began to play some good quality hockey passing the ball early and into space. The forward line of Charlene Vranch, Cherilyn Carey and Ella Sage gave Frome the run around and Mendip soon began to find the gaps in the Frome defence. A goal soon followed from Meg Adams to bring the score to 1-1.

After a determined half time talk Mendip went out to secure a win. Mendip continued to hold majority of the possession and pressured the Frome players on the ball.  Many short corners were won  by Mendip but not converted.  Frome attacking on a break were fortunate to be awarded a short corner as the Mendip keeper was deemed to have intentionally kicked the ball over the base line. Frome took their chance to take the lead and then held on for the win.  Cherilyn Carey was unlucky not to bring the score to 2-2 when Mendip were awarded a penalty flick for a defender’s foot on the line.  Hayley Young gained the players’ vote for Player of the Match for her excellent distribution throughout the match.

Mendip need to dig deep next Saturday to take 3 points from the match against West Wilts at home 10.30am. (Norton Hill School, Midsomer Norton)
