Ladies 3rd XI 3 vs. Bristol Bluebirds 2

31.1.15 : Ploughing through Bristol traffic meant that half the team had no chance to warm up before this match with bottom of the table Bluebirds in Westbury-on-Trym. However, Mendip were not put off by the sight of the home side’s large squad and knuckled down to what turned out to be the most competitive and physical fixture yet.

Bluebirds scored first from a strong short corner strike which just dipped to hit the backboard. Oenone Bodman-Harris  regained her composure admirably after running out to close down another attempt at goal by the Bluebirds’ strong forwards. Mendip quickly settled into confident expansive play and after a couple of near misses, Lucy Hemings slotted the ball passed the keeper at the other end. Bluebirds next goal, an unfortunate ricocheted off a Mendip defender, caused controversy between umpires and captains but it was rightly re-instated.

Mendip’s team of 11 dealt easily with Bluebirds’ rolling subs every ten minutes and continued to play strongly in the second half. Madison Collins snipped a second goal and Emma Moffat finished off a loose ball to gain the lead. Mendip defenders kept the home team at bay right to the end and come away with another win which now sees them 5th in the division. Jess Smith earned player of the match, disrupting many of Bluebirds’ advances from her mid-field position

Emma Moffatt.
