Somerset Gryphons 3 – 0 Mendip Ladies 2XI

Table topping Somerset Gryphons were made to work hard for their victory in this match and for much of the first half Mendip seemed the better side. Their accurate passing ensured they dominated possession and pressurised the home team defence but unfortunately were not able to convert any chances.

Mendip’s defence was in fine form throughout the match. Both Sarah Whittaker and Jess Baird thwarted many an attack and then were on hand to make goal line clearances when needed.

The deadlock between the teams was broken when a penalty flick was awarded which Gryphons converted to go in a goal up at the break.

Mendip felt sure they could get something from the match and continued to play out the 2ndhalf with grit and determination. Frustratingly they failed to convert attacking chances even when awarded numerous short corners in a row. The home team went on to score 2 more rather scrappy goals and the match ended with them being awarded another penalty flick  following some last ditch, desperate defending from the visitors. Mendip keeper OenoneBodman-Harris this time spectacularly saved the flick much to her teams delight. Her heroics throughout the match, pulling off some brilliant saves ensured she was voted Mendip’s player of the match.

Next week Mendip are at home in Midsomer Norton to play Clevedon, 1,30pm start at Nroton Hill School.
