4/10/14: Despite an encouraging opening quarter, which saw the kind of passing and movement that has been missing from Mendip’s season so far, the ladies firsts suffered another heavy defeat on Saturday. Mendip started strongly, with Anna Swift making some timely interceptions and Sammy Chivers making her trademark runs down the right flank. However, some contentious umpiring, combined with no small amount of determination from the young Devizes side, saw Mendip trailing 2-0 by half time. Mendip started the second half brightly, with Jess Harding working hard to link the play from right midfield, and Fee Phimunchat pressing play well down the left. Fortune continued to favour the home side, however, and a couple of well-worked penalty corners, plus a goal from a goal-mouth scramble saw them pull further ahead. Mendip stayed positive until the end, but Brenda Scott was unable to capitalise on an excellent chance after making a great run down the left, and Meg Adams saw a shot well saved by the Devizes keeper.
Player of the match was Jess Harding.
On Saturday, Mendip face Frome at Norton Hill (10:30am)
