4/10/14: Saturday morning saw more typical hockey weather and a full team plus reserves including four more league debuts. The game started full of purpose with Mendip passing and supporting well, facing the more-experienced South Glos side. Debut and player of the match, Ella Sage proving very troublesome to the visitors with her speed and strength up the left wing. South Glos mid-fielders engineered the first goal from a well-placed forward on the post although all other advances were thwarted by Olivia Collins and captain Lucy Hemings strong defence around the circle and goalkeeper Oenone Bodman-Harris’ confidence with her feet. Mendip’s goal came from a short corner penalty strike by Emma Moffat, shortly followed by a second opportunity bravely stopped on the line by South Glos’ keeper-less defence. The second half saw South Glos re-shirt a defender as a kicking back, obviously feeling threatened by Mendip’s young but determined forwards. Indeed this half saw the home side with most of the attacking play and many scoring chances – Monica Glover, Jasmine Scott, Jess Smith, Madison Collins and Kay Downey all so close! The visitors’ second goal came after a short corner attempt not properly cleared by Mendip, the ball played hard back into the D and skillfully deflected into goal by well-placed Esther Legg-Bagg again. This second league game is another indicator for an exciting season where the goal tally must surely rocket as experience and confidence grows.
Thank you to the band of vocal supporters, and to umpires Andy Flint and Paul Woolway.
Next Saturday sees the team face local rivals Keynesham 2 (nee Frys) at Wellsway School, pushback 12.30pm.
