Ladies 2nd XI 1 vs. Old Bristolians 3rd XI 5

10/1/15: Mendip travelled to Bristol hoping for a positive start to the second half of their season but it was not to be. Initial hopes were raised when it was evident that the hosts had no keeper but it meant they were able to then compete with 11 outfield players and this advantage showed in all areas of the pitch.

Old B’s were able to dominate possession and Mendip were all too often chasing the game, finding it hard to link and play good passing and moving hockey. The Mendip defence were kept busy throughout the match and not surprisingly the player of the match was right back Grace Harding. Both her and Esther Selway stood out for their solid tackling and excellent clearing of their lines.

Mendip’s goal came in answer to the hosts first, midway through the opening half. Left wing Connie Glover ran into an excellent position to connect with a ball from midfield. She showed great composure to then find centre forward, Carol Holmes who deftly slotted the ball home from a tight angle.

For a time in the 1st half the teams were level and despite good work in midfield from Captain Jackie Browning the host’s one player advantage shifted the balance in their favour and they went on to score 4 more times.

Next week Mendip commence their return league fixtures and are expecting a tough encounter against Bristol University at home in Midsomer Norton, 13.30hrs start.
