3/10/15: Mendip worked hard on Saturday to earn an away point against a Salisbury side who were East Division champions last season, but opted to avoid promotion. Boosted by last week’s super performance against Swanage, Mendip started the game brightly. The mixture of youth and experience throughout the side looked effective, with senior players Hayley Young and Anna Swift combining particularly well with young counterparts Jess Smith and Grace Harding. Young came close to opening the scoring for Mendip midway through the first half, when her fierce penalty corner effort pinged off the far post and away to safety. Despite several other opportunities, the match was goalless at half time. The second half saw player of the match Kay Downey make a number of excellent runs down the left wing, and her efforts were rewarded on 50 minutes, when she tore apart the Salisbury defence, before crossing for Young to fire home. Mendip could have sealed the win late on, but Smith saw her effort saved by the diving Salisbury keeper. With just minutes remaining, the home side equalised with a scrappy rebound effort that on another day would have been disallowed for dangerous play. This Saturday, Mendip welcome Frome to Norton Hill, pushback 1.30pm.
