Ladies 2nd XI 2 vs. Clevedon 1st XI 1

3/10/15: Knowing their opposition had defeated their opponents in last weeks’ match by 13 goals did not fill Mendip with much confidence for this encounter but their match on Saturday far exceeded their expectations. It was an extremely good team performance from Mendip in all areas of the pitch. They were strong and disciplined in defence, getting back in numbers so the visitors had few scoring opportunities. Cosima Burgess excelled in her left back position tackling, tracking back and passing accurately earning herself the player of the match award. The midfield duo of captain Jackie Browning and Karen Inns worked well together proving to be an excellent link between attack and defence. Mendip scored twice in the first half and each goal came from good passing and moving hockey. Left wing Connie Glover picked up on a through ball to calmly slide her shot in under the keeper to open Mendip’s account. The second was from Jasmine Scott who had a particularly good game at right wing. She was perfectly positioned in the D to connect with an accurate cross from the right to double Mendip’s lead. Mendip continued to play well during the second half maintaining the lion’s share of possession and were unlucky not to score any more. The visitors did manage to slip one goal in past Mendip which only served to strengthen the host’s resolve to come away with the win. Next week Mendip travel to play Keynsham at Wellsway sports centre and will look to build on this positive performance.
