Ladies 1st XI 1 vs. Frome 1st XI 1

30/1/16: Mendip travelled to Frome on Saturday for a local derby against their well-known rivals.  With Mendip’s captain carrying an injury from the previous game and Ella Sage also taking a knock many players were out of position.

The first half was a well contested match, the forward trio of Hayley Young, Kay Downey and Jess Smith ensured the Frome defence didn’t have a chance to take a breath. Brenda Scott worked tirelessly up and back to support the forward and defensive players. Frome had many opportunities too, attacking down the right but these were suppressed by the duo of Cherilyn Carey and Anna Swift.  Early in the game Mendip, after a series of well worked passes, found Young on the post to take the lead. After the early goal Mendip began to settle and began to take control and had majority of the possession.  However Frome, against the flow of play, scored from an unfortunate bobble of the ball which seemed to in slow motion cross the goal line. Mendip put this behind them and continued to press for the rest of the half.

The second half and a change in formation saw Mendip take the reins and control the game from the first whistle to the last. Player of the match Jess Harding showed a high level of skill to snake in and out of the Frome players to create numerous chances, but the Frome GK was unstoppable and quashed Mendip’s shots on goal. Amy McGowan playing her first game for the 1st’s demonstrated she could control the ball at speed and showed composure in the attacking circle also creating many chances to score. But the luck wasn’t with Mendip and chance after chance went wide or was saved and the game finished 1-1.

Thank you to Vicky Parfitt for umpiring.  Mendip play Devizes next week at Norton Hill (1.30pm).
