20/2/16: Mendip’s mixed fortunes continued this week when they paid the price for a lack of form during a short period of play in the second half of this match. Prior to this, Mendip had managed to draw level with the league leaders and dared to hope they might take something from the game. However conceding 3 goals in fairly quick succession put the game out of their reach.
The score line is not really a true reflection of the possession held by the visitors or their performance. From the start, the Mendip defence stood firm with Kate Penn and Olivia Sheppard soaking up much of the hosts’ early pressure. Following good attacking play Mendip were first to score with an easy tap in from right wing Karen Inns.
Captain Jackie Browning and left midfielder Cosima Burgess worked tirelessly in midfield supporting the team in both attack and defence. Mendip’s player of the match was Sarah Whittaker who was making a very welcome return at left back. She marshalled the defence and showed great skill frequently stopping the Nailsea attack in their tracks.
By half time the hosts had managed to score 2 goals. Shortly after the restart, following a period of sustained Mendip pressure, centre forward Carol Holmes brought her team level with a bullet shot from a tight angle in the D.
Mendip would have been extremely happy with a draw from this match but it was not to be. They now have some must win fixtures left in the league otherwise relegation will be a reality.
