Ladies 1st 2 vs. Yeovil & Sherborne 2nd XI 2

2/3/16: Mendip Ladies 1st team travelled to Yeovil for the last game of the season; knowing just a point would be enough to keep them out of the relegation zone. Within the first five minutes the umpires had made themselves known and Mendip had already conceded a short corner. With a lifted strike hitting skipper April Callow the first of many short corners were saved. Mendip began to get into the game and were becoming acclimatised to the bumpy Yeovil pitch. Attacking runs were made by Charlene Vranch and Ella Sage upfront but the Yeovil defence stood strong. Mendip were first to get on the goal sheet with youngster Jess Smith sending the ball from the right for Kay Downey on the left to score. Yeovil were quick to respond and from a short corner the ball was lifted into one of the Mendip defence, who was deemed to be stood behind the line and therefore a dubious goal was awarded. Mendip continued to press forward even though they felt hard done by. Hayley Young, Georgie Kelly, Brenda Scott and Jess Smith worked tirelessly in midfield to send searching ball for Vranch and Sage. Just before half time Mendip finally were awarded a short corner and a very composed Smith scored her first goal of the season taking the score to 2-1. The second half was a different story with Mendip on the back foot for most of the 35 minutes. Yeovil scored an early goal and Mendip struggled to maintain possession up the field. There was chances for Mendip to take the lead, with balls up the line from Sammy Chivers from the left from Callow and Sage on the right ,but Mendip couldn’t finish off successfully. Yeovil maintained a high level of possession and the experience of Mendip’s defence shone through. Player of the match Anna Swift demonstrated her commitment to the team playing most of the match with a fractured hand. The defensive unit of Swift, Callow, Oenone Bodmin-Harrie, Cherilyn Carey and Hayley Bullock defended over 20 short corners leaving Yeovil frustrated and unable to take the lead and the game finished 2-2. The well-earned point leaves Mendip 5th in the league, with one more match next week in East Division the lowest Mendip will finish is 6th.

Mendip would like to thank all of their supporters and coach James Callow for his input this season.
