Mendip’s faltering start to the season continued this week with a frustrating defeat to this Bristol side. The first quarter of the match was very much a battle in midfield with neither side threatening the goals. Mendip increasingly applied more pressure to the home team with some good attacking hockey and took the lead following a short corner. Forward Emily Browning was suitably place in the D to calmly slot home the ball after a goal mouth scramble.
Mendip maintained their lead until the half time whistle. Solid defending from backs Olivia Collins and Georgia Price kept the youthful Clifton attack at bay. With timely tackles and accurate distribution of the ball, Collins ensured she was Mendip’s player of the match too.
At the opposite end of the pitch her sister Maddy Collins worked hard to support the Mendip attack. Her pace and skilled stick work proved a challenge for the home team’s defence but unfortunately Mendip were not able to capitalise on any further chances created during the match.
The second half started quite brightly for Mendip as they looked to increase their lead. However, Clifton took their chance when they converted a short corner to draw level. This seemed to unsettle the visitors who were increasingly under pressure and ended up conceding another goal to ultimately loose the match.
Next week, the league season starts with Mendip at home in Midsomer Norton at Norton Hill School against Old Bristolians 2.
