27/09/14: Despite some fine individual performances, Mendip’s opening league fixture of the season ended in defeat. Mendip started brightly, with Brenda Scott working hard to press the Bournemouth defence and Anna Swift making some telling interceptions from centre back. After an even first twenty minutes, Bournemouth took the lead, capitalising on Mendip’s failure to clear a loose ball in the D, to slot the ball home. The start of the second half saw Mendip youngster Ellie Hudson make an immediate impact, using her pace to great effect to put the Bournemouth left back under pressure. Mendip earned a number of penalty corners, but the usually reliable combination of Hayley Bullock and Hayley Young could not find the crucial finishing touch. Bournemouth then doubled the lead against the run of play, following a quick counterattack down the Mendip left. Any hopes of a comeback were dashed late on, as Bournemouth scored a third to put the result beyond doubt. Mendip’s player of the match was Anna Swift. This Saturday, Mendip travel to Devizes, pushback at 11:15am.
