3/01/15: Mendip took the opportunity to test themselves against a tough opposition on Saturday with a keenly contested friendly against Clevedon-based Gryphons.
After the festive break, the hosts began looking somewhat rusty, with Gryphons pressing high and consistently stepping in front of their markers. Despite some fine tackling from centre back Hayley Bullock, and a brave performance by Anna Swift, Mendip were soon two down and struggling for momentum. A number of saves from keeper Carrie Tiley kept Mendip within range at half time.
The second half saw an improvement in Mendip’s passing game, with Meg Adams responding well to several changes in position, and Ellie Hudson and Carol Holmes working hard in attack. This renewed determination paid off mid-way through the half, when a skillful run by Hudson saw the ball threaded to centre forward Charlene Vranch, who showed great composure to beat the keeper and slot the ball home.
Mendip finished strongly, but without the equaliser that their second half performance deserved.
The player of the match vote was awarded to Carrie Tiley.
This Saturday, Mendip face Old Bristolians at Norton Hill.
