Ladies 1st XI 1 vs. Wimborne Wayfarers 1

27/2/16: Mendip worked hard against a physical Wimborne outfit on Saturday, and were perhaps unfortunate not to have come away with more than a point.

The visitors started strongly, forcing Mendip onto the back foot for the opening exchanges. The home side gradually found their rhythm, and fluent passing saw them begin to dominate possession. Strong running from midfielder Brenda Scott and player of the match Jess Smith allowed Mendip to set up camp in the Wimborne half. Mendip’s persistence paid off after twenty minutes, when they were awarded a penalty corner, which Hayley Bullock dispatched with consummate ease. Mendip created further chances, with Ella Sage and Kay Downey both troubling the Wimborne defence, but Mendip were unable to increase their lead.
With time running out, Mendip committed more players forward in search of a second goal, and in so doing found themselves outnumbered in defence. Goalkeeper Oenone Bodman-Harris pulled off an outstanding save in a one-on-one contest with the Wimborne centre forward, but the visitors were quickest to respond to the rebound and slotted home an equaliser with just moments remaining.
This Saturday, Mendip face Team Bath Buccaneers at Bath University.
