Ladies 1st XI 1 vs. Wootton Bassett 4

28/2/15: This fixture proved to be a real “game of two halves”, with Mendip more than matching their hosts in the first half, only to crumble under pressure in the second.
Wootton Bassett took the lead within 5 minutes, taking advantage of a disorganised Mendip defence to slot the ball home from wide on the left.
Mendip soon found their rhythm, however, with full backs Sammy Chivers and Jess Harding defending well. The midfield trio of Brenda Scott, Hayley Young and Ellie Hudson worked hard to link the play, creating chances for Charlene Vranch and Ella Sage up front. With twenty minutes played, Hudson drove deep into the Bassett D and saw her cross-shot saved. Vranch was first to the rebound to secure a deserved equaliser.
Bassett began the second half as they had the first, pressing high and scoring an early goal. As the half wore on, Mendip found that they could not match the hosts’ organisation and determination. Bassett went on to score twice more without reply.
With time running out, sterling work on the goal line by Mendip’s player of the match Young ensured that the deficit was no worse.

This Saturday Mendip face Weymouth at Norton Hill School (1:30pm).
