26/9/15: Mendip’s season got off to a flying start on Saturday with a convincing win against Swanage. Charlotte Lucas opened the scoring just ten minutes in, when she picked up Cherilyn Carey’s through-ball and slotted home from close range. Following a good spell of possession, Mendip doubled their lead from a classic penalty corner routine, with Hayley Bullock finding the crucial finish.
Mendip continued to look strong throughout the remainder of the half, with centre midfielder Jess Smith putting in an excellent performance on her first team debut. Youngsters Kay Downey and Grace Harding also proved to be more than a match for their more experienced opponents.
Brenda Scott put the result beyond doubt early in the second half, showing typical determination to run the length of the field to finish off a flowing passing move.
Swanage rarely troubled the Mendip defence, and when they did, the home side looked composed, with Anna Swift making some particularly good tackles.
This Saturday, Mendip face the stern task of an away fixture against last year’s East Division champions Salisbury (11:30am).
