Ladies 2nd XI 0 vs. Bristol Uni 3rd XI 8

12/3/16: Mendip suffered defeat at the hands of a young, well-drilled side at the weekend meaning the last two weeks of the season are now more important than ever if Mendip hope to avoid relegation.

For much of the first half, Mendip were defending and doing a good job of keeping the university side out. Mendip kept tight to their players and did not allow them any room, but when Bristol University did manage to wriggle through, goalkeeper Danielle Seymour was on hand to deny them with many impressive saves. Unfortunately Mendip went into half time a goal down, despite all their hard defensive work.

The early stages of the second half brought a few attacking chances, however Mendip were unable to convert them into an equaliser. Bristol University were quick on the break and managed another goal to double their lead, followed closely by a third – a hopeful high ball that found its way into the back of the net. This put Mendip on the back foot but defenders Kate Penn and Sarah Whittaker continued to put in timely tackles and intercept attacking balls to keep the away team at bay. Whittaker, who was player of the match for her brilliant defending, also cleared two balls off the goal line to deny Bristol University. However, these efforts weren’t enough and as Mendip became tired the visiting side managed to put five more goals past them to bring the final score to 8-0.

Next week Mendip travel to Gordano where they face North Somerset.
