16/1/16: Mendip knew a game against table topping Cheddar was going to be tough encounter but perhaps did not expect to concede within the opening minutes of the match. This put the home side very much on the back foot. They found themselves playing quite a defensive game and struggled to create many attacking chances.
Cheddar did manage to find the back of the net again during the 1st half but had it not been for a formidable performance in goal by Katie Selway the gap between the teams would have been greater. Making a welcome return to the team, Selway proved she had lost none of her flair and she shared the player of the match award with team mate Georgia Price. Defender Price put in performance way beyond her years showing great determination to make the tackle and win the ball, supporting her team all the way.
At the break, Mendip did feel some optimism that they were only 2 goals behind and may actually get something from the match. They then proceeded to have a much better half and really took the game to the visitors. The Mendip players worked hard and supported each other to make the most of the space in which to make great attacking moves.
Cheddar’s lead was halved when centre forward, Carol Holmes scored. Following a strong attacking move a determined Holmes was on hand in the D to fire home after her previous shot had been saved. After this, Mendip continued to play with more confidence and self-belief but despite their best efforts, could not find the back of the net again.
So in a game of 2 halves, victory was Cheddars in the 1st and Mendips in the 2nd. The home side will take many positives from this and will look to build on this performance next week when they travel to face Clevedon 1st.
