Ladies 2nd XI 1 vs. Somerset Gryphons 4

21/3/15:

The score line of this match was not a true reflection of the game in which Mendip yet again put in a strong first half performance but then struggled to find their form in the second.

Mendip applied early pressure to the visitors defence but failed to convert scoring chances. It was against the run of play that Gryphons scored but Mendip’s reply was a sneaky goal from right wing, Karen Inns.

Mendip’s defence of Esther Selway, Cosima Burgess and Grace Harding worked well together in the first half with beautifully timed tackles and great clearances. Midfielders Olivia Sheppard and Paula Smith proved their worth with great inter linking play. All of this strong attacking play was undone unfortunately when Gryphons managed to score from a short on the stroke of half time.

During the 2nd half Mendip struggled to keep their shape and their game play lacked the usual passing and moving, flowing hockey. Defensive lapses enabled the visitors to score twice more in the last quarter of the match ensuring Mendip conceded another disappointing defeat.

Mendip’s player of the match was Grace Harding who put in a strong performance at right back.

Next week Mendip stay at home, Norton Hill School, 1.30pm start for their final match of the season and will look to end the season on a high note.

Karen Inns
