17/10/15: Mendip played host to table topping Nailsea on Saturday and knew to expect a tough encounter but the visitors were made to work for their victory. Mendip were able to soak up much of the early attacking pressure with great work in defence from Olivia Collins and joint player of the match Karen Inns. Mendip’s goal keeper Danielle Seymour pulled off some excellent saves to keep her team in contention.
Rather inevitably Nailsea did manage to put 3 past the Mendip defence in quick succession but the hosts managed to pull one back before half time. Left wing Connie Glover made a tremendous route one attacking run to connect with a through ball into the D. Her goal bound shot from an acute angle found Carol Holmes’ stick who then nudged it over the line.
Mendip showed a positive spirit throughout the match and did not let their heads go down. During the second half they had good periods of attacking play. The left side worked particularly well together with midfielder Olivia Sheppard providing great support to both attack and defence. Captain Jackie Browning worked tirelessly in midfield and led her team by example which ensured she was the other joint player of the match.
Mendip did manage to halve the deficit between the teams with a goal from Carol Holmes who fired the ball home following a goal mouth scramble. Any thoughts of a comeback though were put to bed when the visitors scored again.
Next week Mendip continue their league campaign travelling to Clevedon to face Somerset Gryphons.
