31.1.15: Mendip started this match brightly and found themselves in the lead with a goal from Karen Inns after just 10 minutes. This seemed to spur the visitors into action however and Mendip found themselves increasingly under pressure struggling to build play effectively. Despite solid defending most notably from Esther Selway, Nailsea found the back of Mendip’s net going in at the break with a 2 goal lead.
A strong, motivational team talk from Captain Jackie Browning at half time was exactly what Mendip needed and an entirely different team performance ensued. The hosts dominated play and Nailsea were allowed no space or time on the ball. Great work down the left from Olivia Sheppard and Connie Glover kept up the pressure as Mendip got back into the match.
A skilful reverse stick sweep of a goal from Inns narrowed the gap between the teams and then a determined effort from Browning with a back board thudding shot drew Mendip level. They continued to press the visitors looking for the winning goal but it eluded them and Mendip had to settle for the draw.
Mendip’s player of the match was the youngest player on the side, Emily Browning. She put in a great performance at right wing with tenacious tackling and excellent positional play to support the attack.
Next week Mendip travel to face North Somerset and will look to build on this positive second half performance throughout the match.
