18/10/14: Mendip bounced back from last week’s defeat with a well-earned victory over league opposition North Somerset. The first half did not go Mendip’s way however and despite having the lion’s share of possession they struggled to convert this into goals. They were two down at the break with both opposition goals coming from first time strikes at short corners.
Shortly after the restart, Mendip found their attacking flair in the shape of centre forward Carol Holmes who narrowed the gap between the teams with a skilful individual goal during open play. Holmes brought her team level with a clinical strike during a well worked short corner routine.
The Mendip defence soaked up any periods of pressure during this half with left back Cosima Burgess working hard and Captain Jackie Browning always keen to take the game to the visitors. Mendip’s third and winning goal came from a good period in inter-passing play culminating with a Holmes strike in the D to gain her hat trick.
Usually, scoring a hat trick is enough to earn player of the match award but that honour this week went to Grace Harding. She had a storming game at right back with her strong tackling, keeping calm under pressure and timely release of the ball.
Next week Mendip travel to Wells Blue School to play Mid Somerset.
