Mendip 3 – Bridgwater 1 (24/10/2020)

Goals scored: Harry Ellison (2), Josh Sutton. MoM: Will Lawton

The mighty Mendip Men’s 1s travelled to Bridgewater this afternoon in soggy conditions. ‘Bridge’ as they referred to themselves, finished high up in the league the past 2 seasons and we expected a serious test. Following a good warm up, we were ready.

We came out of the blocks flying, playing with an intensity that the Bridge didn’t see coming. Amongst our dominance the team in red tried their best to disrupt our play and this led to a sour mood for one particular player that unfortunately led to our skipper getting a green card for ‘removing’ the player’s dropped stick from the pitch. Other than this blip, we had a vast amount of good possession and moved the ball extremely well, making a plethora of chances, peppering the Bridgewater GK.

Somehow we just couldn’t scrape a goal that we utterly deserved. Half time it was 0-0 yet there was next to nothing to improve or change and I probably gave my shortest half time talk ever! More of the same was the order.

The second half was indeed more of the same and the team in red looked tired as the game wore on. Eventually following an excellent back-tracking tackle from Max Bartlett (who was excellent throughout) led to the ball dropping to the skipper, who passed infield to me and I broke down the right to play in Chris Hampshire on the right of the D, who played a cross goal pass that took a deflection to ‘Baz’ Harry Ellison, who connected sweetly to place the ball into the top left corner! Jubilant scenes for the Yellow and Blue including for our superb travelling support!

Quickly after this we won a short corner which Baz duly flicked into the bottom right. Baz Nation was in full flow and Mendip were not done there. Yet more pressure led to a scramble in the D and the ball fell loose to the stick of Josh Sutton, who duly obliged. 3-0 and Mendip in wonderland.

As the game wore on so did the team in red and frankly we were much fitter than them but they held firm and somehow managed to score a strange goal that started from a player who spurned a pass on the right of the D into a shot at goal that John Carroll saved onto the post but it deflected into the air and was knocked overhead by a player in red into the goal. This didn’t shake our dominance though and albeit there was a little pressure for about 4 more minutes, we controlled the game and continued to create chances.

A huge 3-1 away win. Everyone had a good game and I could truly write about each player and how much they left it on the field today. Special mention to ‘Jonboy’ Jon Holland, playing for the 1s for the first time in 3 years, who was superb at the back and won every tackle, making some superb passes and aerials too. So glad to have him back.

Baz Nation was truly born today and he was only pipped to MOM by Will Lawton. Making the 2 and a half hour return journey up from Padstow to basically boss the midfield all game was simply amazing. Not to mention the travelling Father Lawton, Steve, who deserves a special mention for being told to stand outside the cage because the opposition’s coach didn’t like him cheering us on whilst beating them on their own turf!

DOD went to the skipper, Max Spalton, largely for the green card but also for being late to arrive and trying to blame others for poor navigation…#prattnav

Couldn’t be prouder to wear the shirt today. A great start and we look forward to welcoming Robbies next week ??
