22/11/14: Mendip Men’s 2nds team travelled to south Bristol to face an Old Bristolians side hungry for points. Despite the opposition lying second from bottom of the league, it was always going to be an unpredictable game and with only eleven players, the outcome of the match would be an uncertain one.
Right from the off, it was clear to see that there would be a battle for possession throughout the game. Mendip had the first chances of the day with the Old Bristolians keeper making some smart stops to keep it at 0-0. Unfortunately for the A’s though, it was the home side who struck first after an attack from the right-hand side of the circle got past the defence, followed by a pass to an unmarked striker at the far post.
Despite this early setback, Mendip continued to fight. The second half that followed was dominated by the away team and eventually Mendip’s persistence paid off. A short corner was awarded and following the injection, it was Mendip who were celebrating an equaliser after the ball was squeezed in at the far post. Mendip continued to pile on the pressure after their goal, but were unsuccessful in clinching a late winner.
After this result, the team remains 5th place in the league.
The Team: Barry Sewell, Mike Bristowe, Andy Baird, Karl Birk, Peter Sutton, Nick Pang, James England, Toby Green, Will Holmes, Chris Hampshire.
