Ladies 2nd XI 4 vs. Shepton Mallet 2nd XI 2

13/09/14: Mendip began this friendly game at home with an almost completely new squad, only 4 players played in the team last year. Despite this, the team gelled well and their victory came about because of great team work shown throughout.

The first half began with Mendip playing most of the game in the oppositions half, making many attacking moves. The first goal came when a shot on goal was deflected by an opposition’s foot meaning a penalty flick was awarded to Mendip. Right wing Karen Inns stepped up to the challenge and was rewarded with a satisfying thud as the ball hit the back board. Mendip doubled their lead when left wing Connie Glover took up a great position in the D to slot the ball in at the post.

A more determined Shepton began the second half and good attacking play resulted in 2 goals to bring them level with about a quarter of the match remaining. Mendip’s defence showed off their skills as they cut out many of Shepton’s attacks. Defenders Karen Holliwell and Grace Harding continued to deny the opposition of any more goals as they linked well with their team to initiate more attacking moves. Cosima Burgess had an excellent game at left defence which earned her the joint player of the match award. She linked well with midfielder, Olivia Sheppard to get the ball out of Mendip’s half. The other player of the match was Emily Browning who put in a sterling performance in attack for Mendip winning short corners and creating scoring chances.

Captain, Jackie Browning, put Mendip back into the lead with a skilful reverse stick sweep into the goal and their final goal came from centre forward, Carol Holmes. She put the game beyond Shepton unleashing an unstoppable shot after connecting well with a through ball into the D.

Next week Mendip play a friendly fixture at home against Frome, 1.30pm start.
