Ladies 2nd XI 7 vs. Frome 2nd XI 0

20/09/14: Mendip played host in this local derby match and came away with a confidence boosting victory prior to the start of league fixtures next week. Mendip dominated play from the outset with good passing and moving hockey and much of the action was in the Frome half. Frome’s defence was bolstered by a rather familiar keeper however. Usually seen in a Mendip strip, Carrie Tylie put in an outstanding performance for them in goal. Captain Jackie Browning opened Mendips account in style with a skilful individual goal. She dribbled past defenders into the D to unleash her shot. She was instrumental in other goals too. Mendips 2nd came from Browning’s cross into the D to find left midfielder Karen Inns waiting to sweep the ball home. Inns also scored twice more in similar fashion either side of the whistle to gain her hat trick which helped earn her the player of the match award. When the ball did break into Mendips half, defenders Grace Harding and Cosima Burgess were in fine form with timely tackles and good stick skills so the Mendip goal was rarely threatened. Mendips lead was increased further in the 2nd half when centre forward Carol Holmes connected with a cross into the D to slam home her shot. Holmes bagged her brace near to the final whistle with a skilful reverse stick sweep into the goal. Mendip’s Connie Glover played well throughout the match and she added to her teams lead with a classic left wing goal being perfectly positioned at the far post to slot the ball home. Next week Mendip travel to Bristol to face one of the new teams in the league, Bristol University 3rds at Coombe Dingle, 3pm start.
