24.01.15: Mendip travelled to Bristol keen to secure 3 points to bolster their league position. This was the first encounter of the two teams as the fixture earlier in the season was conceded by today’s hosts as they were unable to field a side.
There was little to choose between the sides in the opening stages of the match. Mendip absorbed any pressure and gradually found themselves playing more of an attacking game with players linking well all over the pitch. The breakthrough came with a goal from centre forward, Carol Holmes who was on hand in the D to shoot home following a flowing attacking move.
Mendip’s lead was doubled in the 2nd half with a skilful, individual goal from Captain Jackie Browning. She passed round several defenders at the top of the D to fire off her backboard cracking shot. The left side of Mendip’s attack linked particularly well this match. Jess Smith proved her worth in midfield making great interceptions and supporting play well. Left wing Connie Glover also put in a great performance, perfectly timing her runs to take up excellent positions in the D and was unlucky not to score.
Firebrands managed to pull one back later in the 2nd half but dogged defending ensured Mendip secured the victory. Mendip’s player of the match was Captain, Jackie Browning who led her team by example playing great hockey at right midfield.
Next week Mendip stay in Midsomer Norton for a home match at Norton Hill School against Nailsea, 13.30hrs start.
