19/3/16: Mendip welcomed Devizes to Norton Hill on Sunday for their second league match of the weekend. The match proved to be a tough encounter, but Mendip displayed good energy levels and passed the ball with pace and purpose.
Devizes opened the scoring early on with a good strike from a short corner.
Mendip responded quickly. A great cross from Georgie Kelly found Charlene Vranch at the top of the D, who hit a first time shot into the corner beating the Devizes keeper easily. Mendip continued to work hard, with April Callow and Hayley Bullock playing the ball out of defence and setting up Ella Sage in attack. Sage crossed for Brenda Scott to score her second goal of the weekend.
After half time Devizes came out fighting and quickly put the Mendip defence under pressure. Mendip worked hard to resist, and, with 45 minutes played, Hayley Bullock took advantage of a stop in play to send a long ball to Sage, who ran half the length of the pitch to calmly slot the ball past the keeper to bring the score to 3-1.
Devizes responded in a fast and feisty manner and, after an untidy phase of play from both teams, Devizes found the back of the net once more.
Mendip tried hard to maintain the lead, but had little opportunity to attack. The visitors pushed on and an equalising goal was scored.
Callow and Carey were jointly awarded player of the match for their determined defending.
On Saturday, Mendip travel to Yeovil and Sherborne, knowing that they need at least a point to avoid slipping into a relegation battle
