19/3/16: Mendip welcomed second-place Wootton Bassett to Norton Hill on Saturday. The game started with a high tempo and Bassett were strong from the outset, putting pressure on the Mendip defence of Cherilyn Carey, Anna Swift and Sammy Chivers. They were first on the score sheet after a good strike from the top of the circle, despite an excellent attempted save by keeper Oenone Bodman-Harris.
Jess Smith and Kay Downey worked well upfront to find space and created a few chances, but it was the visitors who were next to find the net, leaving the score 0-2 at half time.
At the start of the second half Mendip came out more determined, with joint players of the match Jess Harding and Hayley Young linking well in midfield.
Jess Smith won a short corner after an attacking run down the right and, following a good strike from Cherilyn Carey, Hayley Bullock was the quickest player to the rebound to slot the ball home. Unfortunately for Mendip, Bassett then extended their lead once more, taking the score to 3-1. Mendip responded and didn’t let their heads drop; they continued to pressure and after a good spell of play Brenda Scott scored from the left post. Mendip finished the match the stronger side but were unable to find the crucial equalising goal.
