Jaspers 2XI 2 V 3 Mendip 2XI

Ladies Hockey (Brunel 1)

Mendip started this encounter brightly, having the lion’s share of possession during the first quarter and frequently threatening the home team’s goal. Their attacking style of hockey was rewarded when a goal line infringement occurred which resulted in a penalty flick for the visitors. Mendip defender, Sarah Whittaker calmly stepped up to the task to beat the keeper, putting her team in front.

Jaspers were then able to draw level but it was not long before Mendip regained their lead. They made the most of a quickly taken free hit to catch the home team off guard and centre forward Carol Holmes was perfectly positioned in the D for an easy tap in.

Throughout the match forwards Maddy Collins and Karen Inns worked well with pace and cool stick skills to support the Mendip attack. Right back, Jess Baird was instrumental in defence ensuring that transfers were swift and clean and the ball was accurately distributed all over the pitch. She was awarded Mendip’s player of the match for her sterling efforts.

As in the 1st half, Jaspers drew level again in the 2nd but this was short lived when following a period of good attacking play, Captain Jackie Browning unleashed a shot from the top of the D to beat the keeper ensuring Mendip’s victory. A nail biting finish ensued when the home team were able to play out 2 short corners after the final whistle but they did not convert either chance.

This was a great team effort from Mendip ending with a well deserved, spirit boosting victory. Next week they play host to Cheddar who will come to Midsomer Norton for a 1.30pm pushback at Norton Hill School.
