28/11/15: Mendip travelled away to Wootton Bassett on Saturday looking to continue their good run against the top placed teams in the league. Despite the cold, wet and windy conditions Mendip started strongly and within the first 10 minutes had several chances to take the lead. Jess Smith in midfield joined well with Ella Sage upfront to test the Wootton Bassett defence. However against the flow of play, Wootton, after a series of defensive short corners, piped one on the post to take the lead. With one minute to go of the first half Wootton Bassett scored a ‘lucky’ second goal when a high ball dropped in behind the young goalkeeper Dani Seymour. The second half Mendip started like the first, with 10 minutes of strong attacking hockey, moving the ball well down the right and the defensive duo of Hayley Bullock and Cherilyn Carey on the left, prevented Wootton advancing into the goal area. Mendip were rewarded from their hard work and after a well worked short corner Bullock narrowed the gap bringing the score to 2-1. Wootton continued to strive forward, but the defence stood strong absorbing attack after attack. With 2 minutes to go a Wootton Bassett forward was giving an inch at the top of the D and after a powerful strike scored the final goal of the day. The final score 3-1 does not reflect the game as it could have gone either way and we will look forward to a re-match at the end of the season. At the half way point Mendip remain 4th in the league.
Player of the match was April Callow.
Next week Mendip 1’s face Mid Somerset at Norton Hill 10.30am for a friendly match before the Christmas break.
