7.02.15: Mendip secured three valuable league points on Saturday, thanks to two great strikes from player of the match Charlene Vranch and an excellent goal from Ella Sage.
Mendip began brightly, with the midfield trio of Brenda Scott, Hayley Young and April Callow working tirelessly to support both defence and attack. The Wilts keeper was forced into action on several occasions, with Vranch and Callow both coming close.
A facial injury to a Wilts player caused a lengthy stoppage after just 12 minutes, but Mendip reacted well to the interruption, and went back on the attack from the restart. With twenty minutes gone, good passing and movement from Callow set up Vranch to put Mendip ahead.
Wilts got back on terms just after half time, when a forward showed good determination to put away a rebound effort following a penalty corner.
Mendip responded immediately with a flowing counter-attacking move, which saw Vranch send a through ball to Sage, who showed great composure to beat the keeper. The home side sealed the victory on the hour, with Jess Harding making a great run down the left and crossing for Vranch to score. Wilts scored the game’s final goal with a deflected penalty corner effort in the final minute, but this proved to be too little, too late for the visitors.
This Saturday, Mendip take a break from league action with a friendly fixture against Somerset Gryphons at Clevedon Sports Centre (1:30pm).
