Ladies 2nd XI 5 vs. North Somerset 3

7.02.15 :  With both teams in the lower half of the table a win for either side would make a relegation battle less likely in March. It was Mendip who came out on top however, putting in a strong team performance to secure all 3 points.

It was an interesting 1st half with Mendip stamping their authority on the match with good attacking play but each time they scored the hosts then managed to score on the break, playing catch up until it was 3 goals each at half time. Mendip’s goals came from both the wings players. Right wing Karen Inns got 2 great individual goals making the most of slack marking to find space in the D. Her daughter, left wing Connie Glover, picked out her position perfectly to connect with a cross and slip the ball in at the far post for Mendip’s second.

With things finely balanced Mendip began to dominate play more during the second half. Central midfielder Paula Smith played a pivotal role in Mendip’s success with great positional play and ball distribution. Captain Jackie Browning worked tirelessly in midfield showing great determination to win the ball and run at the defence. It was from these characteristic Browning sorties that Mendip were able to increase their lead and eventually secure victory. Accurate passing from Browning found Inns in the D who buried the ball to secure her hat trick and then added another to put the game beyond North Somerset.

With 4 goals to her name and classic right wing play throughout, Inns was Mendip’s player of the match.

Mendip have a break next week but will be back in action 21st Feb when they face Mid Somerset at home in Midsomer Norton, Norton Hill School, 13.30hrs start.
