Ladies 2nd XI 0 vs. Somerset Gryphons 5

24/105:  A youthful Mendip team had a tough encounter on Saturday against an experienced Somerset Gryphons side not only because of the elements but also the match official. Quite clearly keen to stamp his authority on the game from the start, one of his first decisions was to card a Mendip player without prior warning leading to her temporary suspension from play. This set the tone for the entire game. All too often Mendip were on the wrong end of 50 : 50 decisions and found the style of umpiring quite unsettling.

However, Mendip did make good account of themselves in the first quarter of the match. Solid defensive work from Esther Selway and Olivia Collins thwarted the hosts’ attack. Jackie Browning and Olivia Sheppard worked hard in midfield and up front to try and take something positive from the game.

Had it not been for a commanding performance in goal by Danielle Seymour the goal difference would have been greater. By demonstrating great reflexes and pulling off several point blank saves she was voted Mendip’s player of the match.

Somerset Gryphons scored twice in the 1st half and completed their victory with 3 more in the 2nd. Despite being behind, Mendip showed great spirit and determination and kept trying to attack right until the final whistle.

With no match next weekend Mendip will be back in action on Nov 7th, 10.30am start at Norton Hill School, Midsomer Norton against newly promoted team Jaspers 2nds.
