Ladies 2nd XI 1 v North Somerset 1st XI 5

28/11/15:

Mendip were looking to finish the first half of their league campaign on a high in this their last match before Christmas but it was not to be. They began well enough in the first half, having lots of possession and passing the ball well to create some attacking chances. Against the run of play, North Somerset scored on the counter-attack, despite the Mendip defence’s best efforts. This goal shocked the Mendip side, who then played increasingly on the back foot.

Esther Selway soaked up a lot of pressure put on by North Somerset throughout the first half and linked well with her teammates to clear the ball out of the danger area. However, North Somerset took their chances and managed to score 4 more times before half time, going into the break with a 5 goal lead.

Mendip were determined to put on a better display in the second half and certainly did. Kate Penn fought valiantly at centre back and put in numerous tackles and distributed the ball well to start attacking moves, earning herself player of the match in the process. Mendip put a lot of pressure on the North Somerset defence and were unlucky not to convert more of their many chances. The home team were rewarded for their tremendous effort when left wing Connie Glover scored in the final minutes and ended the game on a positive note for Mendip.

Mendip have a break now until after Christmas and will be back in action on January 9th in a friendly away against Shepton Mallet.
