Ladies 2nd XI 1 vs. Bristol University 3rd XI 3

21/02/15:  With the return fixture earlier in the season ending in a heavy defeat for Mendip, the visitors may have been excused for thinking that victory was already in the bag but they were made to work hard for their 3 points on Saturday.

They did open the scoring quite early on in the 1st half, but Mendip were able to raise their game, absorb the pressure and cancel out Bristol’s attacking threat. The home side did have scoring chances but unfortunately were not able to convert them.

Shortly after the restart at half time, Mendip drew level. An initial Carol Holmes shot was saved but she then picked out left wing Connie Glover with the rebound who was perfectly placed at the far post to slot the ball over the line.

Great work from the Mendip defence kept the team in with a fighting chance. Left back, Cosima Burgess was particularly strong, thwarting many of the visitor’s attacking moves. Mendip’s player of the match was well deserved by Esther Selway as she stood out in defence with impeccably timed tackles and fantastic distribution of the ball. Crucial saves during the match from Mendip keeper Carrie Tiley kept the home side in contention but it was an unlucky, cruel deflection which put the visitors ahead midway through the second half.

With the visitors youthful energy increasingly making a difference between the teams they put pay to any hopes of a Mendip equaliser with a goal shortly before the final whistle.

Mendip will now look to take the positives from this match forward into next week when the face table topping Mid Somerset. The action starts at 1.30pm Norton Hill School, Midsomer Norton.
