14/3/15: With the return fixture earlier in the season ending in a heavy 6 : 0 defeat, Mendip could certainly take heart that only 2 goals separated them this time. With just the bare 11 players Mendip dominated play in the 1st half and there were plenty of goals for the home crowd to cheer.
Cheddar were first to score but Mendip’s answer came swiftly in the shape of Olivia Sheppard, who had a storming game at left midfield. Following a short corner routine she was unmarked in the D and created a looping shot into the net to draw level. The left side of Sheppard, Cosima Burgess and Connie Glover linked particularly well for Mendip and following a periods of good inter connective play, they were able to increase their lead further. Left wing Glover picked her position perfectly in the D to sweep home at the far post to bag a brace of goals and her work rate throughout the match earned her Mendip’s player of the match award.
Mendip’s 4th goal was a determined effort from Captain Jackie Browning. Following good attacking play she managed to pull the ball back out from under the stranded keeper then score from a tight angle.
Mendip were certainly buoyant at half time, confident they could get something from the match but it was not to be. Cheddar came out strongly for the 2nd half. They gradually got themselves back into the match having the luxury of 3 substitutions, so fresh legs up against a tiring Mendip. The visitors added 4 goals to their tally in the second half to which Mendip had no reply.
Next week Mendip stay in Midsomer Norton to face Somerset Gryphons, 1.30pm start at Norton Hill School.
