9/1/16: Mendip kick started the second half of their season with what turned out to be a convincing win over local rivals in this friendly fixture. During the first half both sides seemed equally matched and just one goal separated them. Mendip’s Georgie Kelly marked her debut performance with a goal coming from a speculative push of the ball towards goal only for it to beat everyone and trickle over the line. Mendip continued to build their play in the second half with noteworthy performances from Olivia Collins and Emily Browning down the right. Player of the match was well deserved by defender Grace Harding who was extremely strong in her tackles, thwarting many a Shepton attack and distributed the ball well. Mendip doubled their lead early in the second half with Captain Jackie Browning taking charge of proceedings in the D following a short corner. After the initial advantage was lost, Mendip turned play in their favour again allowing Browning to unleash a cracking shot from the edge of the D. Throughout the match Mendip’s attack linked well with some great passing and moving hockey on display. Left wing Connie Glover made great gains and was rewarded with a goal to increase her team’s lead yet further. Not only was she involved in the build-up play but she was then in a great position the D to fire home her shot. The match was put out of Shepton’s reach by Mendip’s centre forward Carol Holmes. She connected with a loose ball in the D during open play to crack home her shot against the back board. Next week Mendip resume their league campaign at home in Midsomer Norton to play Cheddar, 1.30pm push back at Norton Hill School. Karen Inns
