1/11/14: Mendip 3rds put together a gritty and determined team performance to secure their first win of the season in a tough friendly against an experienced opposition in City of Bath. The visitors made their intentions clear early with an attacking formation that forced Mendip into a defensive role from the outset and keeper Oenone Bodman-Harris confidently pulled off a number of saves to deny Bath an early lead. In spite of their strength in attack Bath floundered in defence and the home side took advantage of this weakness with a move against the run of play resulting in a finely struck goal from Monica Glover. Mendip remained resolute in defence against a hard hitting Bath forward line, with newcomers India Rogers and Izzy Morgan battling hard at the back, and cemented their half time lead with a second goal as right wing Madison Collins found the net. The second half saw more evenly match play with both teams finding opportunities and Bath looking for a way back in to the match – their efforts were rewarded with a first and very soon after second goal to level the score. In the final quarter the home team raised their game and put Bath under pressure again, forcing a short corner which they converted with a well worked move by Emma Moffat to Lucy Hemings who buried the ball. To the delight of the supporters Mendip sealed their well earned 4-2 victory with a late fourth goal from hard working left wing Kay Downey and India Rogers was voted Player of the Match.
Lucy Hemings.
