27/09/14: Mendip had a faltering start to their league campaign, suffering a heavy defeat at the hands of Bristol University. The youthful, well drilled home side quickly stamped their authority on the game playing a style of hockey usually evident in leagues above Brunel 1.
Mendip were 2 goals down after only minutes of the starting whistle and a tough match ensued. Captain Jackie Browning worked hard in midfield trying to turn defence into attack and Mendip’s Grace Harding and Jess Harding were kept busy trying to clear their lines.
Mendip had a better period of play midway through the 1st half. A skilful attacking run down the right into the D from Fee Phimunchat enabled her to score from a tight angle. Phimunchat narrowed the gap between the teams further when she bagged her brace with a tap in following a flowing short corner routine.
With the scores at 4 : 2 at half time, Mendip felt more positive they could take something from the game but Bristol proved too strong, putting a further 5 goals past Mendip in the second half. Despite this Mendip did not give up and kept battling to gain possession until the end. Mendip’s Cosima Burgess put in an outstanding performance at left back throughout the match. With timely tackles, quick tracking back and accurate passing she bolstered the defence and was well deserved player of the match.
Mendip now look to put this defeat behind them and prepare for next Saturdays match at home to Firebrands 4ths, 1.30pm start and Norton Hill School.
