28/03/15: Mendip made the East Division champions work hard for their win on Saturday. Player of the match April Callow put in a great shift in midfield and forward Kay Downey had an excellent game on debut, but clinical finishing saw the home side take the three points.
Mendip tried to establish the tempo of the game from the start, with the whole team passing and moving well. Salisbury edged ahead with a goal clipped in at the far post after a strong run down the left had drawn the Mendip defence.
Undeterred, the visitors continued to look comfortable on the ball, with the centre-back pairing of Hayley Bullock and Anna Swift looking particularly composed. Callow’s strong runs down the left created some promising openings, but the Salisbury defence stood firm.
The second half saw the home side double their lead with another well worked goal. Hannah Bartholomew came close to putting Mendip back in contention late on, but her far-post shot mysteriously evaded the goal.
After a season plagued by illness, injury and structural reorganisation, Mendip finished in a creditable 7th position in East Division.
The team would like to thank captain Hayley Bullock, temporary Coach Sarah Hall, all the Mendip umpires who have made the games possible, Chef Andy and the staff at Midsomer Norton Rugby Club, and all the friends and family members who have offered their support this season.
Mendip will next be in action in the first week in May, when the Annual Summer League begins.
