24/10/15: Mendip Ladies 1’s suffered their first defeat against a strong and fast Yeovil side on a very wet and cold Saturday. Mendip started brightly and had the lion’s share of possession for the first 15 minutes, Kay Downey and Carol Holmes worked hard up front to find gaps in the Yeovil defence. The next 20mins saw Yeovil begin to settle and increase the pressure, they had a spate of short corners of which they scored from 2. Full of confidence Yeovil continued to move the ball around with speed and accuracy with Mendip struggling to gain possession. Yeovil took a greater lead with a skilful play into the D resulted in Yeovil’s third goal. Mendip came out determined in the second half to get back into the game, attacking runs from the mid-fielders gave the forwards opportunities to score but we could not beat the Yeovil defence to find the back of the net. During a short corner a Yeovil foot on the line gave us a chance to score, Charlotte Lucas stepped up calmly to execute a perfect penalty stroke and this brought the goal difference to 2. Mendip worked tirelessly to the end and defended with grit and determination. But Yeovil did find the net once more with a well drilled short corner routine and the game finished with Yeovil winning 4 goals to 1. Charlotte Lucas had a strong performance at Left Back which earned her Player of the Match.
Next Saturday Mendip face Central League toppers Shepton Mallet for a friendly game (Norton Hill 10.30am) before resuming league matches on Saturday 7th November travelling away to Wimborne Wayfarers 1.30pm push back.
