27/2/16:
Mendip travelled to face fellow league strugglers Jaspers, knowing that only a win would do to help them stay in Brunel 1. Thanks to a hat trick of goals from centre forward ace Carol Holmes to secure a victory, some of the pressure has now been lifted.
The away side had much of the early attacking pressure, hassling for possession and taking the game to the hosts. Early on Mendip were awarded a short corner and up stepped Holmes to convert it with a bullet shot from the edge of the D to give her team the lead.
Mendip’s lead was short lived however when Jaspers drew level. The teams were evenly matched in all areas of the pitch and were level still at half time. Mendip’s captain Jackie Browning, determined that her team were not going to loose, put in a gritty performance in midfield and versatile midfielder Jasmine Scott used her pace and skill to take on the home side’s defence.
For the first period of the 2nd half Mendip began to dominate play and increased their lead further with 2 more cracking goals from Holmes. The noise of the ball hitting the back board was almost as loud as her Captain shouting “finish!” as she fed the ball through to her in the D. Hat trick Homes was deservedly Mendip’s player of the match.
Mendip found themselves under increasing pressure during the closing stages as the hosts tried to get back into the match. However, the defence were equal to the challenge and kept a clean sheet.
Next week Mendip are at home, Norton Hill School, Midsomer Norton for a 1.30pm pushback against Clevedon 2nds.
