8/11/14: Mendip bolstered their league position with a well-earned victory at home to Keynsham. The Mendip defence was strong and able to absorb much of the early pressure from the visitors. Wing backs Grace Harding and Cosima Burgess were pivotal in this providing many a timely interception and clearing their lines well.
It was perhaps against the run of play that Mendip opened their scoring account with a beautifully taken strike just inside the D from centre forward Carol Holmes. This seemed to settle the home side and they then played with more confidence up to half time.
The visitors looked to get back into the match early in the second half but failed to cope with strong Mendip attacking play. It was a mother and daughter affair which increased Mendip’s lead. Captain Jackie Browning put through a ball into the D for right wing Emily Browning to run onto and slot in past the keeper at the near post. Both Browning’s had great games. Emily for her brave, determined efforts down the right wing and Jackie for her tireless, strong play in midfield. Mendip’s 3rd goal was a superb individual effort by the captain who found the back of the net with a reverse stick sweep.
With the score at 3 : 0 Keynsham were able to pull 2 goals back to narrow the gap but victory was sealed with another goal from Captain Browning. This clinical strike and her work rate throughout the match earned her the well-deserved player of the match award.
Next week Mendip continue their league campaign away to Cheddar at Wells Blue School. 11.30hrs pushback.
