12/09/15:
Mendip started their campaign with a flying friendly against West Wilts at Kingsdown School. A new season bought new players to the team who have moved up from the 3rds and they all fitted in really well. It was a busy game from the off with a quick pace from both teams and confident passing and tackling.
The first goal came from Carol Holmes who was in fine scoring form. As well as providing the assist for her other team members to score she found the back of the net on a further 3 times during the match.
Left wing, Connie Glover bagged a brace of goals. The first following good interlinking play and the other a great solo effort taking the ball from the half way line to venture forwards into the D to then strike the ball into the back of the net.
Mendip’s other goals were more of a family affair with Captain Jackie Browning scoring twice in the second half. She led her team by example working hard all over the pitch and it was her daughter Emily who consolidated Mendip’s lead further. Her classic right wing play ensured she was perfectly placed to connect and bury the ball in the West Wilts goal.
The hosts did manage to put 2 past Mendip. The first under slightly confusing circumstances and the 2nd with a bit of sustained pressure from them. Every Mendip player linked up well and the game was played in good spirits. Particular noteworthy performances came from Emily Skyrme in defence and from young midfielders Lucy Davis and Jess Smith.
The 9-2 scoreline was a good job done for a first game playing together and a great platform to grow on for the coming season. Next week Mendip will be at home in Midsomer Norton to face Shepton Mallet, 1.30 push back.
